Fly fishing is hot and heavy right now with just about all the species up shallow and feeding. The Largemouth bass spawn is going on in north Texas but not for much longer and if youre further south it should be mostly over and theyre chasing shad. Frog bite/top water bite has been decent most morning but this week evening bites been better. Streamer fishing game changers, jerk changers, ep baitfish in shad and bluegill colors, olive/white drunk and disorderlys and crawfish patterns have been best with krelex minnows scoring fish during lulls as well as popper droppers.
Bowfin are also either spawning or about done spawning depending on which lake your in. Making for some stellar and unique sight fishing bowfin action. Mostly throwing olive or crawfish orange crawfish/leach patterns at them with either bead chain or extra small lead eyes and poling the shallows looking for them layed up or cruising. Common carp have been spawning across the state and are also in different phases of the spawn. Lake Conroe has been tough but the fish are 15 to 20lbs so worth the frustration. North Texas like Lake Ray Roberts though has been really good with several 5 to 10 carp days. Orange carp buggers have been almost all ya need check out my youtube for a “how to”. Alligator gar bite has gotten really good just battling high flows every other week but if you time it right its on. Depending on rains it should only get better as the flows come back down. recent rain storms might change things but thats part of fishing big water. Thw 12wts are locked and loaded and waiting for ya. Spotted gar and Longnose gar have been spawning in the shallows but if you can find ones out and about theyll eat just about anything near them. Consider throwing carp bugs, poppers or articulated stuff.
Its one of the best times of year to be on the water and were loving every second of it. Look for this to continue into the summer heat. Once we do get hot expect bass to get more about the early morning late evening bite but more topwater action too. Bowfin will be back to cruising the shallows as they recede with summer low water and males quit guarding babies. Carp fishing is hot right now but fishes great through out the summer heat and low water and the cotton wood seed surface sipping action is about to heat up.
